Overview

Established in 2007, the Centre for Speech & Hearing Impaired Programme offers B.Tech- SHIP in Computer Science & Engineering (CSE). The Kalasalingam Academy of Research and Education is India's first institution to offer a special B.Tech. Program for People with Hearing Impairment. This course is designed for people who need extra attention and want to learn how to adapt to real-world problems in the engineering industry. The University has designed the curriculum and syllabus so that after completion of this course, these students will be at par with other Engineering graduates in terms of being able to meet the needs of various industries. English is the medium of instruction. During the first two years of study, students are trained for the NIOS Senior Secondary Examination (National Institute of Open Schooling, MHRD, Govt of India).

The B.Tech.-SHIP (CSE) programme is accredited by NAAC with an A grade with a CGPA of 3.11. The Centre for Speech & Hearing Impaired Programme employs accomplished and well-trained faculty to teach students about this specialised area. All the classes are handled by specially trained teachers. On January 5, 2007, the former President of India, Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, inaugurated this course. The Institute also has a Speech and Audiology lab where students' speech and hearing levels can be monitored and improved. Almost all the students from the previous batches have been put in MNCs with good annual packages comparable to that of a normal graduate. Kalasalingam Academy of Research and Education takes pleasure in helping these differently-abled students integrate into the mainstream of nation-building.

Industry Collaboration

The department also collaborated with many organisations such as E&Y, JP Morgan, Wipro, TNQ, SYRMA, etc. to offer internship & placement opportunities to the students. The students of the B.Tech-SHIP(CSE) programme are offered a One Credit course by the Industry and International Professors. The department regularly organizes conferences, seminars, guest lectures, workshops, symposiums and training programmes to maximise the impact of classroom education.

Program Collaborations

1. KARE has a Memorandum of Understanding with the Youth4Jobs Foundation to run its SMART Inclusion Center at the University. The centre’s key goal is to increase the employability and employment of applicants with disabilities.

2. SIC offers disability-related conferences, Faculty Development activities, and Sign- Language workshops to help educators become Disability Confident.

3. It provides foundation and domain skills instruction to students with disabilities in order to improve their overall capability.

4. It collaborates closely with organisations to ensure that students have access to hands-on projects, internships, additional skill training, and on-campus interviews.

Programme Objective

After the Completion of the Programme

1. Graduates will be technically qualified to succeed in the IT industry and further their education.

2. Graduates will be able to design and build economically and technically viable computing systems using cutting-edge technologies and techniques.
